Aleigh Lewis (b. 1980) is a graduate of Oberlin College and currently a candidate for MFA in Film/Video at CalArts with almost a full scholarship funded by the Disney Family and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Aleigh's work has screened internationally and nationally. Please read reviews here.
Aleigh recently returned from the world premiere of The Closest Farthest Away at the Havana International Film Festival, a collaborative project between Cuban and American artists since 2005. This live performance is an intersection between theater and cinema, mixing layers of video projections with live actors on stage. The paradigm of the performance intensifies the disconnect between a physical and a virtual world which is a response to the inability for Americans and Cubans to travel to each other's countries. The Closest Farthest Away will nationally premiere in Miami at the Global Cuba Fest in March 2010.
Aleigh has been selected as the first CalArts student to attend a four month residency at the prestigious cultural institution CENTQUATRE in Paris, France starting May, 2010. She will be doing research for a documentary film about the politics and aesthetics of light and the balance between quality lighting and energy efficiency. Aleigh was also a 2009 Feldstaerke Fellow with the CENTQUATRE and PACT Zollverien.
Aleigh is a recent recipient of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences internship grant which funded assisting Academy Award nominated director Kirby Dick in the summer of 2009.
Aleigh also works as a producer/director for TurnHere, making promos for small businesses that appear on Yellowpages.com. This work has been extremely educational, meeting as interesting people from hormone therapy doctors in Beverly Hills to heating & air conditioner salesmen in North Hollywood.
Aleigh's additional skills include managing lots of interns, writing important proposals, and overseerer of general office flow which she utilized in full force as the studio manager for Doug Aitken while filming his MoMA installation Sleepwalkers.
